here's the thing about "aggressive" spiders

if a spider is running right at you, it's not trying to pick a fight with an animal thousands of times its size. you're so big that it didn't recognize you as an animal at all. it thought you were part of the landscape and it's trying to either take shelter or get to higher ground. if you don't want it crawling on you just kinda stomp on the floor so it can realize you're not stable ground and fuck off

My dad was an aviation engineer and used to spray paint his tools the most obnoxious hot pink he could find. Not only did it make it easy to find his tools, but the amount of guys who wanted to use them went down drastically, and they always made sure to bring them back to my dad so they wouldn’t be caught with pink tools.

My dad always got a kick out if it, and to this day a good chunk of his tools at home are a beautiful shade of hot pink.

I think you guys will appreciate the fact that the Te Reo word for French is Reo Wiwi which basically just translates to ouioui language

Oui! And Wīwī isn't just the word for the language, it's also the word for French and France.

This all dates back to the early years of contact between Māori and Europeans, when communication was in te reo on the Māori side (obviously) and basic Tahitian on the European side (which is a whole other interesting story).

Māori realised that there were two distinct groups of white people turning up, and that the easiest way to tell them apart was that people in the smaller group kept saying "oui, oui". So they became ngā tāngata Wīwī - the oui oui people.

oh, no, it's older than that. Certainly back in the 14th century and probably earlier (I just say 14C because I remember Dante commented on it), it was pretty common in the Romance areas of Europe to refer to different linguistic/geographic groupings by the way they said yes. So, Italian was 'la lingua del sì', there were various languages/langues of oui and oil and so on, and... well. You know the modern province of Languedoc? Historically languedoc meant the area in which Occitan is spoken, and guess what 'oc' meant...

I wasn't aware this tradition of identifying cultural/linguistic groups by their various 'yes'es had had a revival with the colonial era though!
